Quenching
Rapid cooling from high temperature generally by immersion in a liquid bath
of oil or water, but molten salt or metal may be used. The object is to reduce
the temperature of a metal rapidly and thus suppress a phase transformation. It
is commonly used to harden steel, but austenitic steel may be quenched to
prevent carbide precipitation and quenching after tempering is used to prevent
temper brittleness.

Quenching Crack
(Hardening Crack) A fracture resulting from thermal and/or transformation
stresses, induced during rapid cooling.
